The issue with privacy is often a concern for many these days and, with new media on the rise, the threat of privacy has become very prominent. As more and more people become more involved in social media, there are often including almost all aspects of their personal information into their profiles. This has now been a concerning issue for especially Facebook users. In 2018, there was a huge scandal regarding this matter as over 2.13 billion active users worldwide were misled by the privacy policy. During this time, it has become a major political issue which revealed that Facebook had harvested the personal data of millions of peoples' Facebook profiles without their consent and used it for political advertising purposes.
In another aspect, an additional privacy concern resulting from social media is the fact that employers are using new media as a source for recruitment for job placement. As they scout for potential candidates' profiles and accounts, they look for any possible flaws that would interfere with the company's values. Through this, many are concerned that sometimes their accounts may be interpreted incorrectly and will place them at a disadvantage when in search of a job.
Privacy is a major concern today with all the technology we use. The Facebook scandal and the fact that employers may check potential new hires social media is definitely a clear representation of a lack of privacy. This is why many end up changing their name on Facebook in an effort not to pop up on future employer searches, but it could be all for nothing. Privacy is a major concern and will continue to become a bigger one as technology grows. This said, we need to become more aware of what’s going on.
ReplyDeleteHello Rebecca, I actually did my term paper on social networking and the loss of privacy of the usage of these sites. I believe that there will always be a privacy problem because people will always try to find a way to beat the system. We just have to be more aware of what we do online to keep ourselves from the threat of loss of our sensitive information. With advancements in social networking, employers are now scouting out new hires by performing a background check on the candidates social media accounts to see the type of person they are outside of work. This can either make or break the candidate's opportunity. This does mean realistic as the company wants to make sure you will be a good representation of the company but it is a loss of privacy as the social media account is where you are able to express yourself.
