Social Media and Its Affect on Human Trafficking

Social Media and Its Affect on Human Trafficking

With social media being the prominent form of communication nowadays, I have always wondered of the effect it would place on Human trafficking. Human trafficking is modern-day slavery and can specifically be defined as "the trade of humans for the purpose of forced labor, sexual slavery, or commercial sexual exploitation for the trafficker or others."(Wikipedia) As we become more willing and accepting of the idea of engaging with strangers on the internet, I can imagine how human trafficking has become a more easily-accessed trap to conspire for many preditors. In the paper, I will be defining Human Trafficking, its outlets and dissecting social media's negative influence on mental health and how victims can be unconsciously manipulated into submission due to their insecurities. To support my claim, I will also state the statistics and the recent studies on this topic. I plan on going into great detail and I am excited to learn about this as I am passionate about these topics.

  1. Hi Rebecca,
It's astonishning me a lot that social media has effects on human trafficking. Through your brief introduction, I noticed that the Internet's accessibility is able to cause serious issues like that, and mostly because of the weak self-protection consciousness of children, they may be the targets for the huamn tracfficking criminals. In addition, social media does bring too much temptation for children to induce them to be fell into the trap. In my opinion, there should be a way for police deparment to utilize social media to investigate the potential crimes and fight criminals.I expect your analysis about this aspect, and hope there are solutions to eliminate this kind of crime.
    Best,
